What is AI and ChatGPT?: Academic Honesty & Plagiarism

Tools to detect machine-generated text are relatively new and constantly being developed, released, and improved.

Because of the limitations of these tools, using multiple detection tools on each sample will provide more accurate responses. That being said, every tool has margins of error, even the very best ones. Remember, even if one of these tools says it is "100% AI-Generated," that does not necessarily mean the text was AI-generated. It just means that it has all the markings of an AI-generated text. There is no foolproof way right now to determine with 100% certainty if an AI chatbot generated a text.

Detection Tools

• AI Text Classifier

  This detection tool was created by the creators of ChatGPT, OpenAI. A blog post on January 3, 2023, says the tool only correctly identified AI-texts 26% of the time. "The model is trained on human-written text from a variety of sources, which may not be representative of all kinds of human-written text. Each document is labeled as either very unlikely, unlikely, unclear if it is, possibly, or likely AI-generated."

• GPTZeroX

  This detection tool was created by Edward Tian, a student at Princeton University. It is an improvement on the original GPTZero.

• DetectGPT

  This is a demonstration version of a tool to detect text. However, as of February 6, 2023, it can only reliably detect material created by GPT-2, which was released in 2019. Most advanced AI is now using GPT-3 or GPT-4.

• AI Content Detector

  This detection tool is from Writer.com.

• AI Detector

  "Our proprietary content generator itself taps into multiple layers with three AI components, NLP, semantic analysis algorithms, and SERP parsing capabilities." This detector was created by Content at Scale.

• AI Content Detector

  "With 99.12% accuracy, it’s the only enterprise solution designed to detect whether the content was written by a human or generated by AI including ChatGPT across multiple languages including English, French, Spanish, German, and Portuguese." This detection tool was created by Copyleaks.

• AI Writing Check

  This detection tool was developed by Quill.org and CommonLit.org. It can only review 400 words at a time.

• Originality.ai

  This AI-text detection tool is a paid service that also looks for plagiarism.
