Embedded Tutoring Overview

Embedded tutoring is a form of supplemental instruction that takes place within the classroom where academic tutors work closely with instructors to provide individualized support and targeted, early-on interventions for struggling students. Embedded Tutoring in co-requisite courses will engage students in course material, increase retention and persistence, and support students as they accelerate into college level courses through the collaborative efforts of instructors and tutors. Embedded tutoring uses active learning pedagogy and a pedagogy of care to support a classroom environment that challenges students and helps them reach new heights in their learning. Tutors who have taken the course and passed with a B or better model successful student behaviors and encourage help seeking. The embedded tutor model sets students up for successful, independent learning for the duration of their academic career. The embedded tutoring for co-requisite courses is funded by the Title V grant and coordinated by the Title V Learning Specialist.

Embedded Tutoring Objectives

  • To familiarize students with the benefits of utilizing support services and effective study and learning strategies.
  • To empower students to become independent learners and critical thinkers while actively participating in the learning experience.
  • To increase students’ self-efficacy and skill based competencies.
  • To create a partnership between instructor and embedded tutor that increases productivity and depth of learning during group work, one-on-one tutoring, and other class activities.
  • To support the growth of tutors in their educational and professional goals and offer a rewarding experience that will allow them to build their interpersonal and leadership skills through mentorship by a seasoned instructor, and expand their resume.

    • Study guides, lecture notes, email tips, additional example problems, etc.
